Alexandria seeks ideas for down the road

Contributed map The Alexandria Area Transportation Study is focusing on five areas (indicated by the yellow numbers) that have been identified as pressing concerns.

Do you have ideas about how to make it easier to drive in and around Alexandria?

Now is your chance to express yourself.

The public is invited to an Alexandria Area Transportation Study open house on Thursday, October 15, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Alexandria City Council Chambers, 704 Broadway.

The open house and transportation study are sponsored by the city of Alexandria, Douglas County and the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Project representatives will be available to answer questions and discuss the study's purpose and goals.

A brief presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

As part of the study, a more detailed analysis will focus on areas with more specific or pressing concerns, including:

•Interstate 94/Highway 29 Interchange and Highway 29 south to County Highway 28.

•50th Avenue from industrial park to South Broadway.

•Highway 29 between 3rd Avenue and McKay Avenue.

•Highway 29 between McKay Avenue and County Road 73.

•Intersection of Highway 29 and County Highway 42/13 near Carlos.

The operation and function of Highway 27 will also be considered, specifically at its intersection with Highway 29.

At the conclusion of the study, a comprehensive long-range transportation plan for the greater Alexandria area will be developed based on the information gathered from the study.

The final report is scheduled to be completed in August 2010.

Here are questions that the Minnesota Department of Transportation is asking in its online survey about the Alexandria area's transportation needs:

•What, if anything, is most frustrating about driving in the Alexandria area?

•Are there roads or highways in the Alexandria area that warrant lane additions and/or widening because of high levels of congestion?

•Are there blind or otherwise unsafe intersections in the Alexandria area that concern you?

•What do you think about other modes of transportation, such as transit, bicycle and pedestrian facilities in the Alexandrea area? Do you have thoughts on the level of service provided by the airport?

•What is/are the most important transportation improvement(s) needed for the Alexandria area within the next five to 10 years? How about 10 to 20 years?
