Pedestrian struck by train near Staples

A Hobart, Indiana man was seriously injured after he fell on the ground near the train tracks in Staples and was struck by a westbound train on Wednesday, July 15.

A Staples Police Department report said Craig Michael Allen, 30, was on foot around 11:30 p.m., attempting to cross the 7th Street railroad crossing when he apparently fell to the ground. The train conductor saw Allen on the ground and activated an emergency stopping device while sounding the horn, but the train could not stop in time, the Staples PD said.

Allen was struck by the train, causing "extensive" injuries, the Staples PD said. He was taken to Lakewood Health System and later airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. The Staples PD is investigating, and said alcohol apparently did play a role in the incident.

The Wadena County Sheriff's Office, Todd County Sheriff's Department, Verndale Police Department, Staples Fire Department and Staples and Verndale Ambulance services assisted.
