Celebrate Independence Day

Summer is finally here and with it comes the annual Fourth of July celebration.

Several events are being planned around the area. Here is a list of Fourth of July celebrations for the Alexandria lakes area and surrounding towns:


Star Storm 2009 is scheduled for Saturday, July 4 on the front lawn of Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center in Alexandria.

The fireworks display, which will take place at 10 p.m. sharp, will be choreographed to music. Viewers are encouraged to tune their radios to 92.3 KXRA FM.

Organizers suggest people start looking for a good seat early. Parking will be available at the Arrowwood stables on County Road 22 and shuttles, provided by Rainbow Rider, will be provided.

Viking Speedway

Colorful fireworks will also explode on Saturday, July 4 at the Viking Speedway immediately following the races - approximately at 10:30 p.m.


Once the sun goes down, Osakis is the place to be for the Fourth of July, where the sky will light up with fireworks.

The best seats can be found at or near the Osakis Country Club, as well as from your boat on Lake Osakis.

Big Chip Lake

The 22nd annual boat parade will be held at 2 p.m. on the Fourth of July at Ramsdell Beach.

Lake Carlos Parade

The 30th annual Lake Carlos Fourth of July boat parade will start at 10:30 a.m. at the Carlos-Darling bridge on Saturday, July 4. Participants are asked to stay in single file during the parade.

Lake Ida Parade

A Fourth of July boat parade will take place on Lake Ida beginning at 10 a.m. Boaters are asked to meet at Gehrke Point.

West Union

The 21st annual West Union 4th of July parade begins at 2 p.m. led by Grand Marshal George Williams, a retired West Union businessman and Korean War veteran.

A potluck dinner will take place in the West Union park after the parade. The public is invited to take part. Bring a dish to share and your own plates, silverware and beverages.

The West Union Country Kids 4-H Club and the West Union community sponsor the West Union July 4 celebration. To be a part of the parade, call Janet Macey at (320) 352-5450.


Weekend action in Villard begins Friday, July 3 with a tractor pull from 4 to 9 p.m. at the old elementary school.

Villard 4th of July events include the following:

•3 p.m. - July 4 parade down Main Street of Villard.

•Fire Department water wars (time to be determined).

•5 to 7 p.m. - Pork Chop feed at the Villard Methodist Church.

•8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. - Street dance.

Villard will finish off Sunday morning, July 5, with Dad's Belgian Waffles from 7 a.m. to noon at the Villard Fire Hall.
