The Alexandria Airport traveled back in time Friday night - to the World War II era, complete with 1940s-style swing dancing, war birds on display and men and women wearing uniforms from 70 years ago.

It was the first-ever "Hangar Dance," a fundraiser for the Douglas County Historical Society.

The idea, dreamed up by KXRA radio personality Patty Wicken, tied in with the Minnesota Historical Society's "Greatest Generation" exhibit by honoring veterans from that era.

The event was a big hit, according to the historical society, drawing about 300 people.

"It was great for a first-time event," said Rachel Barduson, director of the local historical society. "We'll definitely do it again."

Doc's All-Stars provided the tunes. The Runestone Rockettes added to the festivities. Jerry VanKempen served as the emcee.

The money raised through ticket sales and a raffle will go to the Douglas County Historical Society's goal of building a new genealogical library/history center.
