Richard Wiitanen, 70

Richard Olaf Wiitanen, 70, Alexandria, died January 26, 2009 at St. Cloud Hospital.

Richard was born in Wolf Lake, Becker County, on August 25, 1938, to Olaf and Ruth (Hanninen) Wiitanen.

He worked for 31 years as the Carlton County tax assessor. Dick was known as a devoted, loving and caring husband, father and grandfather.

Richard is survived by his wife, Carol Wiitanen of Alexandria; son, Bruce (Cathy) Wiitanen of Alexandria; daughter, Eve Marie (Jeff) Gehling of Eagan; grandchildren, Whitney Wiitanen, Emily Wiitanen, Olivia Wiitanen, Alex Gehling, Erin Gehling and Megan Gehling; two sisters, Carol (Robert) Murray of Grand Marais and Mary Ann Wiitanen of Cloquet.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; and stepfather, Rudolph Niskanen.

A private funeral service was held at the Anderson Funeral Home on Thursday, January 29 with the Rev. Dale Olson officiating. Kim Byrne provided music. Inurnment was at Evergreen Cemetery in Alexandria.
