Challengers file for Alexandria City Council

Races for key positions in Alexandria city government will spice up this fall's elections.

Three seats are being contested.

Alexandria Mayor Dan Ness filed for re-election and will be running against challenger Virgil Batesole, owner of The Alexson Apartments.

Harvey Weisel, council member in Ward 3, is being challenged by Owen Miller, who served the council in another ward in 1995 and 1996.

And David Tischer has filed to run against incumbent Elroy Frank in Ward 5.

All three positions are for four-year terms.

The city council is made up of five council members and the mayor. Under the city's charter, the mayor does not vote. The mayor does, however, lead the meetings and has the authority to break ties and veto council decisions.

The filing period for city offices opened on August 26 and closed on September 9.

School board incumbents

are unopposed

Positions on the Alexandria School District 206 School Board, meanwhile, are uncontested.

Three incumbents - Dave Anderson, Pam Carlson and Jim Hafdal - have filed for re-election.

The school board is comprised of seven members. Members serve for four-year terms.

All three incumbent candidate names will appear on the November 4 general election ballot.
