Attack survivor to share her story
Someplace Safe of Douglas and Pope counties is proud to present the first-ever "Unity Gala" planned for Friday, September 12.
The event, which will take place at the Lakeside Ballroom in Glenwood, is a fundraiser for Someplace Safe.
The evening will be emceed by Lonnie Wing of KXRA-Radio and will include live music.
Hors d'oeuvres, a silent auction and cash bar will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a live auction set for 7:30 p.m.
There will be a special presentation at 6:30 p.m. by Joyce Jenney, who taught school in Glenwood from 1960 to 1991.
Jenney, a survivor of a stranger attack, hopes that by sharing her story she will help other survivors recover. She also hopes her story will help other people better understand the many issues related to assault.
Community members, residents and businesses can take a stand against violence by supporting the first-ever Unity Gala, according to organizers.
Businesses can be a sponsor, donate retail items for the auctions or host a table during the event. Business owners and their employees can also attend the event.
Individuals can volunteer, donate auction items or buy a ticket and attend the gala.
Tickets, which are $20, can be purchased at Thrifty White or Elden's Food Fair in Alexandria; Samuelson's in Starbuck; and Someplace Safe in both Glenwood and Alexandria.
Proceeds from the Unity Gala will benefit Someplace Safe of Douglas and Pope counties.
