The first time Tenner and Roma Thompson met Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was on the road to the Anchorage airport. It was 1995, and the Thompsons, of Alexandria, were flying home after having spent two weeks in Wasilla, Alaska, while visiting their son, Kirk Thompson.

Crews worked at the intersection of 12th Avenue and Broadway in Alexandria Wednesday to install wider storm sewer lines. A detour is expected to be lifted sometime this afternoon, Friday. The new lines, 54 inches in diameter, will replace existing ones that are typically 24 to 30 inches.

Drainage fix clogs traffic

A project to improve drainage flow in Alexandria is temporarily clogging traffic. The city is installing bigger storm sewer lines as part of a $3 million project that’s expected to help alleviate flooding throughout the city.

Court says CR 42 can roll ahead

It began in April 2008 and will take several years, but eventually all of Minnesota’s 158 types of license plates will be flat, rather than embossed, and produced in a manner that saves time, space, money and a few unpleasant chemicals, while it makes the plates easier to read.

Services for violence victims expands to include whole county

More help is on the way for victims of domestic violence. The Otto Bremer Foundation awarded $100,000 for two years of funding for Someplace Safe of Douglas County, which offers domestic violence advocacy services.

County locks in jail site

A new milestone has been reached in Douglas County’s long quest for a new jail. At a special meeting Monday morning, the Douglas County Board reaffirmed its plans to build a new jail at the site of the current public works center along 3rd Avenue West by giving the architectural firm the green light to proceed with the project.

Four motorcyclists killed in one week, two seriously injured

Public safety officials are urging motorcyclists to practice safe riding behaviors following a week of crashes that resulted in four rider deaths and two serious injuries. To date in 2008, 39 riders have died, compared to 37 at this time last year. In all, 61 riders died on Minnesota roads last year.
