Farm and garden conference to be held

Soil and All Its Inhabitants will be the lead session in the 2013 Farm and Garden Conference to be held Wednesday, March 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Alexandria Technical and Community College (ATCC) in Alexandria.

Dr. Don Reicosky, professor emeritus, University of Minnesota in St. Paul, will present the current science of soil, what's happening to farms and gardens as the earth responds to rising temperatures and reduced rainfall.

The conference, a mixture of the latest science and practical steps both farmers and gardeners can take to save the soil for future generations, will also present strategies for increasing farm and garden productivity.

Speakers include Jim Nichols, former Minnesota secretary of agriculture, speaking on wind farming; Al Jahnke, agricultural and energy advisor to Senator Al Franken; John Schultz, farmer, former legislative candidate and Conservation Farmer of the Year; and Gary Brever, current Conservation Farmer of the Year and owner-operator of Ploughshare Farms.

The conference is sponsored by the Citizens Climate Lobby as a public service. It is free and open to the public.

Sessions will be held in Rooms 209-11 at ATCC. Seating is limited. Registration is required. To register, e-mail or call (320) 219-1107 no later than Saturday, March 9.
