Extension tests pressure canner gauges

The University of Minnesota Extension, Douglas County is now equipped to test pressure canner gauges for home canners.

A pressure canner is used for canning low-acid vegetables, meats, fish and poultry.

Two basic types of canners are available: one with a dial gauge and one with a metal weighted gauge.

The canner that includes the dial gauge to indicate the pressure inside the canner should be tested annually.

Home canners are encouraged to check the rubber gasket if the canners have one. It should be flexible and soft, not brittle, sticky or cracked.

Small pipes or vent ports with openings should be clean and open all the way prior to canning.

Drop off gauges by Tuesday of each week during the months of June and July to be tested at Douglas County Service Center, 720 Fillmore Street, Alexandria.

They can be tested for $3 per test and will be ready for pick up Friday of that same week.
