Volunteer opportunities

A variety of volunteer opportunities are available in Douglas and Pope counties.

Alexandria United Methodist Church: Volunteers needed for the free community breakfast on the second Saturday of each month. (320) 763-4624.

School District 206: Adults 50 or older needed to work with children in kindergarten through fifth grade to lead games, share healthy snacks, and learn good eating and physical activity choices.

Sessions meet weekly for an hour after school for eight weeks; training and materials provided. Background check required. (320) 762-2142, extension 4670; rturner@

Miracle Horse Riders: Sidewalk with riders, lead the horse, clean barns, help groom and get horses ready for riders, help riders brush horses and work on grants and fundraising on Mondays and Thursdays. (320) 766-2994.

Love INC: Join Clearinghouse volunteer staff as receptionist or intake volunteers anytime Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon. (320) 759-3022.

Someplace Safe: Repot, prune and revive corner of garden green. (320) 762-1995.

Someplace Safe Thrift Store: Volunteers are needed on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Help with donations, lifting boxes and furniture, and sorting and pricing items. (320) 763-4677.

North Country Food Bank: Work at WE Fest 2014 for two seven-hour shifts in VIP Hospitality (catering).

United Way: Help serve hot dogs, brats and pop at Tom’s Food Pride Hot Dog Stand, Friday and Saturday, June 20-21. Work in two-hour shifts from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. (320) 834-7800.
