Lawn concerts return with 57 Chevy reunion

57 Chevy will perform at the Red Willow Arts Coalition free concert on Thursday, May 23 at 7 p.m. on the lawn at the Douglas County Courthouse in Alexandria.

This will be a reunion concert, as the band, consisting of Luis "King Louie" Moreno, Paul Strand, Dave Primus, Chuck Wencl and Bob Wilken, hasn't played together for more than 10 years.

Moreno picked up a guitar as a youngster, and soon, he and his bass-playing brother were out in public entertaining. He loves taking people back to the era of artists such as Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Ritchie Valens and Elvis Presley.

Strand of Glenwood was the drummer for the band for more than a decade. Primus from Melrose held down the bass position and added both lead and harmony vocals. He's also an accomplished concertina player.

Wencl, local saxman, added flavor to the band, with tunes like Diana and Tequila featuring his horn. Keys man Wilken of Alexandria added a vintage sound to the band with his Jerry Lee piano and Leslie organ.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. In the event of inclement weather, listen to KXRA 1490 AM for cancellation information.

The Red Willow Arts Coalition is a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide the community with access to more musical experiences.
