The Alexandria Area Arts Association will present Lucky Stiff, a musical comedy by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaterly, April 19-28.

How far would you go for $6 million?

Meek and unassuming British shoe salesman Harry Witherspoon leads a predictable life. That is, until he receives word that his uncle has passed away and he now stands to inherit $6 million. But there's a catch.

In order to get the money, Harry must take his uncle's embalmed body on one final vacation to Monte Carlo and pass him off as alive. If he fails, the money will go to his uncle's favorite charity, The Universal Dog Home of Brooklyn, which sent a representative to keep a close eye on Harry.

Further complicating Harry's life is his uncle's volatile mistress, Rita La Porter, who originally stole the money from her Casino-owner, mafia connected husband.

Along the way, even more obstacles come in the guise of a brash Italian, a drunken maid, Monte Carlo showgirl, a leper, a Texan, an evil landlady and others.

After Lucky Stiff, composers Ahrens and Flaterly went on to create Once on this Island, Seussical and Ragtime. They also worked together on School House Rock and the animated film Anastasia.

Lucky Stiff premiered off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizon in April 1988 and won the Helen Hayes Award for Best Musical.

Show times are April 19, 20, 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m. and April 21 and 28 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for students and seniors, and can be purchased at (320) 762-8300. This production is sponsored by Integrity Title of Alexandria.
