The Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum in Alexandria received a big splash in a major publication, not once but twice.

Classic Boating, a bi-monthly magazine published in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, has been informing and entertaining boating enthusiasts for 28 years. It's known as the premier magazine of vintage boating.

In its September/October 2012 issue, the magazine featured the local museum in an eight-page spread.

The opening sentence noted, "It is appropriate that the land of 10,000 lakes and 150 boat builders also has one of the finer museums documenting its boating heritage."

The story gives a nod to museum founders Carl Mammel, Jim Eidsvold, Tom Juul, Tom Akenson, Robert Niedenfuer and Bruce Olson for continually expanding the museum's boat galleries.

The article details the history showcased in the museum, including the beginnings of the Alexandria Boat Works and its founder, Erick G. Erickson, who came to the U.S. from Sweden with his family in 1868.

With only a 6th grade education, he eventually held more than 100 patents in the boating field.

By 1952, the company had constructed an estimated 15,250 boats.

Several photos accompany the story, spotlighting exhibits, museum members and their classic boats, and a miniature outboard motor collection from the mid 1950s to early 1960s owned by Jim Hultman.

The museum was again spotlighted in Classic Boating's January/February 2013 issue, this time for its popular Chain of Lakes Classic Boat Show it holds at Arrowwood Resort in July.

The story was splashed across 15 pages and featured many of the boats that can be seen at the show, along with vintage automobiles.

Olson, organizer of the show, was interviewed by the magazine.
