Quilters share inspirations, ideas, techniques

Julie Satterlie a member of the Lakes Area Quilters, gives a demonstration at an event.

Are you looking for quilters to connect with? Lakes Area Quilters welcomes you to our monthly meetings where we share inspirations, ideas, new techniques and methods for quilting and related fiber arts.

The Lakes Area Quilters meet on the third Monday of each month at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 1204 N Nokomis NE, in Alexandria. The doors open at 6:45 p.m. with a time for socializing. Our business meeting begins at 7 p.m., followed by a program and ending with everyone's favorite, "Show and Tell." We do not meet in December, July or August.

Our program committee selects the speakers and events for the year. We include education nights, local quilters, Minnesota designers, and member socials in our programming.

The program committee encourages members to participate in activities, which may include Lotto Blocks; Round Robins; Quilt-O (our version of bingo) Secret Valentines and President's Challenge.

The program activities vary. We offer full day classes featuring the month's speaker once or twice a year. The first class this year will feature spray starch appliqué, silk ribbon embroidery and beading techniques.

Lakes Area Quilters give back to the community by providing a quilt for each new Habitat for Humanity home in Douglas and Pope counties; supporting Pioneer Public TV quilting shows; demonstrating different techniques at the Rose City Threshing Festival and Douglas County Fair; providing Fons & Porter magazine and quilting books for the Douglas County Library; making quilts for the Quilts of Valor program, which supplies quilts to wounded servicemen; offering grants for sewing projects to our member county 4-H chapters; making and filling stockings for Jingle Bells; collecting food for the food shelf .

Lakes Area Quilters is a nonprofit organization funded by member dues and our quilt raffle. The raffle quilt is made and quilted by members. You may have seen us selling raffle tickets at Art in the Park, Rose City Threshing Festival or the Douglas County Fair. Raffle tickets are also available from our members.

The quilts, wall hangings, bags and other items made by our members are showcased at our annual quilt show in Rose City at the Threshing Festival in August. We also display the quilts at the Douglas County Library, where member quilts are rotated every two weeks.

We welcome you to join us for membership or a meeting. We have members in Douglas, Pope, Todd, Grant and Otter Tail counties. For more information or a program schedule, contact Jean Back, president, at (612) 605-8127.
