The National Elks Lodge sponsors an Americanism Essay Contest each year. The 2013-14 topic was “What Does Veterans Day Mean To Me?”

During the week of Veterans Day, Voyager had a Veterans Day Program and covered a short unit on veterans and Veterans Day. Fifth-grade teacher Sue Arnold asked all the students to write an essay and submitted them to the Alexandria Elks Lodge.

A few members at the lodge chose three papers to send on to the district level. The student essays sent on were written by Ethan Johnson, Tate Olson and Kent.

The district Americanism committee then chose three essays to send on to the state Americanism committee. The state committee chose Kent as third place winner.

Arnold presented Kent with a plaque and a check for $200.

They fought for us, they died for us, and they stood watch for America. But most of all they risked their lives for us. And what can we possible give back to them? Veteran’s Day is one day out of the year we can honor the ones who have fallen, the ones who are still here today, and the ones who served for America. We can remember their determination, their discipline and their loyalty to keep the lives we have today.

Veteran’s Day is a day where the ones who gave everything they had come into our minds, and we realize how much they have given to us. They fought for us and they would do it again if they had to.

If you could picture our country without freedom, justice, liberty, and peace, that’s what our country would be like if all those men and woman didn’t leave the comfort of their homes and their loving families to defend America and fight for our freedom. I know what Veteran’s Day means to me. It is a day to take time and think about how veterans changed all of our lives.
