Cardinal Knowledge Bowl competes at state tournament
The Cardinal Knowledge Bowl team in Alexandria, consisting of Will Reed, Carly Snell, Carl Branch and Eric Branch, recently competed in its second consecutive state tournament. Hannah Vickstrom went as the pocket box operator.
The members entered the tournament with the goal of bettering last year’s finish of 11th place.
The state meet consisted of a 60-question written exam on Thursday night, followed by five oral rounds of questions on Friday. There are three teams to a room for the oral rounds.
Alexandria scored 45 out of 60 on the written test, putting it in 16th place going into the oral rounds.
In the first round, it went up against teams from Northfield and Thief River Falls. Its final score of 17 moved it from 16th to fifth place
In the second round, it went up against Eastview and Prior Lake. The team led the round until the final five questions. The final scores were Eastview 14; Prior Lake 13 and Alexandria 12.
Alexandria moved down a room and was tied for sixth with three other teams. The third round pitted the team against Chanhassen and Brainerd. Alexandria earned seven points and fell to 11th place.
After a lunch break, the team regrouped and entered round four against Northfield and Brainerd. The team’s 14 points moved it up to eighth place and a final round matchup with Chaska and Eastview.
Eastview won round five with 14. Chaska scored 13 and Alexandria scored 12.
After tallying points, Alexandria settled into eighth place with 109, four points away from the medal ceremony.
At the end of the awards ceremony, the Alexandria team received the Heritage Award, which is given annually to the team that best exemplifies the spirit of competition and teamwork expected in Knowledge Bowl.
