Fifth grade students to attend Safety First program

All 5th graders from Douglas County, including 60 students from West Central, will participate in a Farm and Home Safety Education program, Safety First, on Thursday, May 1 at the Runestone Community Center in Alexandria.

The program is coordinated by area safety experts such as local utilities, police, sheriff and the ambulance department. The staff and administration of the school have also agreed to participate.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

8:45 to 9:10 a.m. Registration

9:10 to 9:20 a.m. Welcome.

9:20 to 9:30 a.m. Klick It for Kelsey.

9:35 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. Workshop sessions (each youth participates in eight sessions), 20 minutes each.

11:40 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. Lunch; Dog demo. Students must pack their own lunches.

1:30 to 1:45 p.m. Wrap-up, snack, start to load buses.

The local Safety First Coalition and planning committee include Dennis Stark, Tom Young, Mike Sheldon, Jim Gripne, Mike Stoen, Earl Anderson and Kim Byrne.

Safety First, now in its 21st year, is a Minnesota youth safety education program. In a hands-on learning format, 5th grade students participate in five hours of safety education on topics such as farm, home and recreational safety.

The goals of the Safety First program are:

● To understand emergency and first aid techniques.

● To develop hazard recognition skills.

● To learn about safety through hands-on interactive learning.

● To reduce the number of childhood injuries.

● To share what they have learned about safety with family and friends.
