The Alexandria Jefferson High School Cardinal Knowledge Bowl team, consisting of Will Reed, Carly Snell, Carl Branch and Eric Branch, is heading to state competition again.

The team outlasted Moorhead’s top team to claim first place at the region tournament and qualify for a return trip to state on Thursday and Friday, April 10-11 at Craguns in Brainerd.

The region tournament pits the top six teams in the large, mid- and small school divisions, with the top two advancing to state from each group.

Alexandria came out of the written round with the top score and then pulled away from Moorhead during the second and third oral rounds to claim the title. They credited their success to good team chemistry.

All day long, Alexandria and Moorhead pulled ahead of the third team in their room. Unfortunately, that is where the second Alexandria team found themselves during most of the meet.

Matt Bittmann, Hannah Vickstrom, Tom Pederson, Dalton Struck and Lydia Gusaas came out of the written round in second place but found themselves further and further from qualifying with each oral round.

They commented after the meet that it was difficult to find a rhythm when the other two teams were so aggressive at buzzing in.

The final results for the meet were as follows:

Alexandria 1, 107 points; Moorhead 1, 103 points; Alexandria 2, 82 points; Moorhead 2, 80.5 points; Detroit Lakes 1, 79.5 points; Moorhead 3, 69 points.
