Brandon-Evansville students receive ExCEL Award

Brandon-Evansville High School (B-EHS) announced that the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) selected William Schroeder and Emily Friedrich as 2014 Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership (ExCEL) Award recipients. Only 32 students in the state were selected for the honor.

ExCEL is a recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors. Students who are active in fine arts and/or athletic activities, who show leadership qualities and who are model citizens in their community are eligible.

Schroeder is the son of Dan and Barb Schroeder. He is active in basketball and football, in which he received the Most Valuable Lineman Award and Dallas Hanson “Desire” Award in football. He participated in the clay target trap shooting state tournament last year.

His past fine arts involvement includes visual arts and band, in which he earned a gold Spotlight on Scholarship.

Schroeder is an “A” honor roll member and a Spotlight on Scholarship athlete. He is active in community service at school through Business Professionals of America and FFA.

Outside of school, Schroeder volunteers at his church and participates in 4-H and Boy Scouts, in which he earned the Eagle Scout Award.

Daniel Johnson, B-EHS social studies teacher, shared the following remarks about him: “William possesses several personality traits that have allowed him to excel as a student and as a leader. William combines the aforementioned attributes to lead by example. He is not swayed by doing what is popular. He tries to live his life in the right way and will admit his mistakes with grace. He is selfless, conscientious and reliable.”

Friedrich is the daughter of Lisa Friedrich and Joe Friedrich. She is active in volleyball and basketball, and was named Most Improved and Most Outstanding Player in volleyball. She also participated in varsity softball last year.

Fine arts involvement includes band, playing piano at contests and visual arts.

Friedrich is an “A” honor roll member, a Spotlight on Scholarship athlete. She participates in student council, student aiding and Business Professionals of America and serves as a class officer.

Outside of school, she helps with elementary basketball and volleyball camp, volunteers at her church, participates in Feed the Hungry Children and more.

Kelly Olson, B-E Middle School English teacher, had this to say: “Emily Friedrich’s leadership skills are apparent in everything she does. She leads in the classroom, in the community, on the court, and can be categorized as tirelessly driven.”
