District 206 presents 3rd annual Eco Fair

Alexandria School District 206, in cooperation with local businesses and organizations, will host the 3rd annual Community Eco Fair on Thursday, April 19 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Discovery Middle School. The school is located at 510 McKay Avenue North in Alexandria.

The eco fair includes exhibits by students, agencies, utilities and green businesses; hands-on kids' activities; demonstration stations; entertainment; door prizes; and healthy food and refreshments available for purchase.

Other featured family-friendly events and attractions include the following:

• Keynote speaker Don Shelby, a retired reporter and TV anchorman for WCCO-TV, will speak at 5:30 p.m. about current research at some of America's top universities on the damaging effect to children that a lack of nature involvement brings. He will discuss the coined term "nature-deficit disorder" in children. Shelby, capital campaign chairman for the Washburn Center for Children, will explain why he has insisted on a nature-based center that can apply what scientists know about the healing effects of nature.

• Kids can explore the Earth inside a 20-foot high giant inflatable globe featuring hundreds of ocean and land images courtesy of satellite photographs taken by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

• The Energy Connections presentation by the Science Museum of Minnesota will focus on the science of energy and energy conservation. Through demonstrations, audience participation and special equipment, children are encouraged to use energy wisely.

• Wilderness Classroom - Gone to the Dogs. Dave Freeman, an explorer who has traveled thousands of miles by dogsled in the U.S. and Canada will present

• Wilderness Classroom - Adventure in the Amazon Rainforest. In 2007 and 2008, Freeman and his friends at Wilderness Classroom traveled 3,000 miles by bicycle and canoe from the Pacific Ocean over the Andes Mountains and across the Amazon Rainforest to the mouth of the Amazon River. Freeman will share the adventure with attendees at the eco fair.

•Performances: "Heroes of the Earth" by Miltona Elementary students at 5:15 p.m.; and Just for Kix dance performance at 6 p.m.

• Eco art contest featuring projects from high school students using only recycled materials or having a sustainability/environmental theme.
