Discovery math team earns 1st place
A team from Discovery Middle School (DMS) in Alexandria earned 1st place at the regional MATHCOUNTS competition held in February.
The DMS team, which includes Taylor Score, Kalli Bowser, Christine Johnson and Ted Deitz, won the right to participate in the state meet. The team is coached by Denise Murken.
Students from area schools will compete in the MATHCOUNTS state championship March 13 and 14. There will be 115 students from 42 schools all over the state vying for the state title. The top four winners at that competition will represent Minnesota in the national competition at DisneyWorld in Florida in May.
MATHCOUNTS is a coaching and competition program that promotes math achievement by students in grades 6-8. The program stimulates interest by making math achievement as challenging, exciting and prestigious as school sports. It is coordinated by the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers, which works with teachers.
