Happy birthday!

Alexandria resident Verneil Thompson’s June 27th birthday is unique. No, it’s not the year, not the month, not even the day. It’s the fact that she shares the birthday with her son, Grant Thompson; her grandson, Mitchell Thompson; and her great-grandson, Griffin Gregoire.

It was a surprise when Verneil’s son, Grant, arrived on her birthday, as women weren’t typically given a due date at the time. Not only that, but he was born on her golden birthday.

“It was just kind of unique the way it all happened,” she said.

When it was time for Verneil’s grandson, Mitchell, to arrive in 1995, it was a golf cart ride that did the trick.

Verneil’s son and daughter-in-law, Gregg and Pam Thompson of Alexandria, visited a golf course on June 26, with Pam’s due date any time between June 24 and July 1.

“Many people remarked that the baby would not come for at least a week, by looking at me. However, I said the baby should come the next day to be on the same day as Grandma Thompson and Uncle Grant Thompson’s birthday,” Pam said. “Sure enough!”

Verneil’s great-grandson, Griffin, the son of Jason and Erin Gregoire of Moorhead, wasn’t supposed to arrive so early.

“His due date was July 5,” Erin said, but his early arrival wasn’t a surprise for the doctors. “I ended up having a C-section on the 27th. At the time, when he was born, I didn’t really think about [the shared birthday] until afterward. It’s probably very rare.”

Not only was Griffin born in 2006 on Verneil’s birthday, but that was also the year that Verneil retired.

“I think it’s pretty cool,” Erin added about the shared birthday, then commented that Griffin “loves it, especially when we’ve had to take a few pictures.”

Verneil thinks the shared birthday supplements their family dynamic. “Each one adds something different,” she said. “It’s just unique that this all happened.”

Even though the four of them have shared the same birthday for many years now, they haven’t celebrated all of them at the same time. The closest they’ve come is a family get-together for Verneil’s 80th birthday last year.

But who knows? The future is full of possibilities.
