Local youth participate in 4-H Summer Escape

Youth from Big Stone, Douglas, Lac qui Parle, Pope, Stevens, Swift and Traverse counties came together on Wednesday, July 9 at Pomme de Terre Regional Park in Morris for a 4-H Summer Escape.

The Summer Escape is an annual event put on by the University of Minnesota Extension 4-H summer interns of these counties.

Thirty youth attended, including Kodi Bundermann, Christina Drown, Rachel Kokett and Shane Massman of Douglas County.

Youth met at the park and participated in team competitions, yard games and other activities that improved skills regarding leadership, problem solving and responding to the needs of others.

The theme for Summer Escape was 4-H Olympics. At the beginning of the Escape, the youth were split into six teams.

They were engaged with the youth of the other counties and challenged to develop social and teamwork skills.

Team challenges included a javelin toss, Minute to Win It activities and a s’more making challenge.

The mission of 4-H Youth Development is to engage youth in partnership with adults and learning opportunities that shape and enable them to reach their potential as active citizens in a global community.
