Alexienne Chorus presents Showtime!

The Alexienne Chorus presents Showtime!, an afternoon of popular show tunes.

The Alexiennes will feature show tunes from favorite movies and Broadway shows such as Pretty Woman, Rock ‘n’ Roll Is Here to Stay and Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

There will also be a guest performance by The Alexandria Area Men’s Chorus.

The event will take place on June 22 at 3 p.m. at the Broadway Ballroom in Alexandria. Doors open at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $12 and are available at the door. A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the Douglas County Food Shelf.

The Alexienne Chorus is a local chapter of Sweet Adelines International. The Chorus features women’s barbershop-style music in four-part harmony: bass, baritone, lead and tenor.

The International organization provides regional training for the choruses, directors and officers.

As part of the International organization, the chorus competes in regional competitions. The region consists of choruses in Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Canada.

The Alexienne Chorus will compete in Minneapolis in 2015.

The chorus started in 1977 and one current member, Phyllis Norton, is an original charter member.

The chorus performs at county fairs, health care facilities, regional events, parties, conventions and churches.

The Alexienne Chorus is directed by Sharon Kempf of Wadena. Kempf has directed the chorus since 1994. Assistant director is Pam Baker of Alexandria.

The officers are Julia Gulbrandson, president; Pam Baker, vice president; Shirley Sampson, treasurer; and Gail Larson, secretary.

Current members of the Alexienne Chorus are from Alexandria, Barrett, Brandon, Carlos, Evansville, Herman, Hoffman, Starbuck, Parkers Prairie and Wadena.
