Pope County Expo to feature traveling veterans tribute 

Visitors to this year’s Pope County Community Expo on Saturday, April 5 will see a patriotic display titled The Cost of Freedom Tribute, honoring America’s veterans, law enforcement officers and firefighters.

The Cost of Freedom Tribute is an indoor display that will be showcased for the first time in Minnesota at the Expo at Minnewaska Area High School in Glenwood.

The tribute also features a replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall, a 9/11 display, a Gold Dog Tag display that lists all casualties since the Vietnam War, a Global War on Terror display, various war pictorial displays of the Vietnam War, Korean War, WWII, Civil War and the American Revolution. 

It also features various American history pictorial displays, as well some of America’s founding documents, presidents and more.

On Friday, April 4, a lighted escort parade is planned as the tribute arrives. Local heroes being honored by the Expo will be part of that parade.

Honored heroes include Pope County law enforcement, posse, search and rescue teams, first responders, 911 dispatch, and fire departments and the Glacial Ridge Ambulance.


The fourth annual Pope County Expo, set for Saturday, April 5 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m, features a keynote address by Joe Schmidt of Channel 5 News, titled, “Silent Impact.”  

His high-energy talk features humor and impact and honors the Pope County emergency services.

Former Twin’s player Al Newman will sign autographs, and youngsters can enjoy the Kid’s Zone, featuring the bouncy house, glitter tattoos, art table and caricatures from 9 to 11 a.m.

Free child care will be provided by Minnewaska Early Childhood Family Education. Other events include:

• Women’s self-defense tactics.

• Fishing with Frisch.

• Fishing with Nancy Koep (kid’s fishing clinic).

• Just for Kix performances.

• I Saw the Signs: Signs an ER visit may be in your future, by Dr. Westberg.

• Fencing demonstration.

• Make/take green cleaning products.

• Child passenger safety tips.

There will be a free shuttle service offered to and from the high school.
