Kensington kicks up its heels this weekend

A big celebration will take place in Kensington this weekend, June 16-18.

Kensington Runestone Days will feature fun and games for children; lots of food; a pageant; street dances; fireworks; softball, bean bag and golf tournaments; crafts and vendors; water wars; bingo; car show; tractor pulls; turtle races, talent show; a big parade and more.

A special exhibit that salutes veterans who have served in all wars will be displayed on all three days of the celebration.

Here's a schedule of events:

Friday, June 16

8 a.m. until gone — 50+ Club Bake Sale at the Kensington Bank.

Noon to 8 p.m. — Kensington Area Heritage Society Museum and Runestone Research Center, "America at War," featuring the 100th Anniversary of the U.S. entering WWI and honoring veterans who have served in all wars.

5 to 8 p.m. — Working Wonders 4-H Club Meal served at the Kensington Community Center.

6 to 9 p.m. — Family Night on Main Street, featuring inflatables, sumo wrestling, jumbo truck, concessions and more.

6:30 p.m. — K-Town Outlaws vs. Urbank Goldtimers.

7 p.m. — Little Miss Runestone Pageant sponsored by the K-Town Bar and Cafe at Kensington Community Center. For more information, contact Jeanne Stamness, (320) 965-2336.

8 p.m. to midnight — DJ music on Main Street.

10 p.m. — Fireworks display.

Saturday, June 17

7 to 11 a.m. — Kensington Lion's Club Pancake Breakfast at Kensington Community Center; Bake Sale by the Nora Ladies.

8 a.m. — Citywide garage sales.

8 a.m. — Runestone Days Battle For the Ax Junior Legion Tournament. Contact Lee Sykora, (320) 815-7534 for information.

8 a.m. — Co-Ed Softball Tournament; pre-register your team with Mike Hagen at (612) 799-5627 by June 14. Eight team maximum.

8:30 a.m — Three Person Golf Tournament at Hardwood Hills Golf Course. Contact Pryce Score at (320) 965-2711 or Hardwood Hills at (320) 886-1400.

11 a.m. — T & T Pedal Pull sponsored by Kensington Bank. Free to kids ages 4-11. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. on Main Street.

11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Color Me Playground fundraiser on Main Street. Wear white and be prepared to go home messy.

11 a.m. to noon — Colorful SPLAT Water War, $3 registration fee, 4- to 8-year olds start at noon, 8- to 12-year olds start at 12:30 p.m.

11 a.m. to noon — Turtle Races, $2 entry fee.

11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Wristband activities, $3 per wristband includes Giant Bubble Station, Slime Scavenger Hunt, Orbeez Pool of Fun, Colorful Paint Slip N Slide, Sidewalk Art Competition.

1 to 2:30 p.m. — Kensington Lion's Bingo at the Kensington Community Center.

Sunday, June 18

8 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Classic Car Show, contact Rick Spillman at (320) 965-2794.

10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. — Father's Day Buffet at the Kensington Café.

10:30 a.m. — Community Church Service at the Kensington Community Center.

Noon — Kensington Memorial Park Dedication Ceremony.

Noon to 6 p.m. — Kensington Area Heritage Society Museum and Runestone Research Center,

"America at War," featuring the 100th Anniversary of the U.S. entering WWI and honoring veterans who have served in all wars.

1:30 p.m. — Runestone Days Parade. Family Floats are welcomed. Contact Annie Hildebrandt at (715) 781-0681. A pie and ice cream social at Solem Lutheran Church will take place immediately after the parade.

3 p.m. — Antique Tractor Pull, weigh-in starts at 10 a.m. at the Kensington Milling Company. All tractors are welcome to participate in the parade. Contact Mike Hoffmann at (320) 805-0555.

4 p.m. — Kensington Norseman vs. Ashby.

Al Edenloff is the news and opinion page editor for the Echo Press. He was born in Alexandria and lived most of his childhood in Parkers Prairie. He graduated with honors from Moorhead State University with a degree in mass communications, print journalism. He interned at the Echo Press in the summer of 1983 and was hired a year later as a sports reporter. He also worked as a news reporter/photographer. Al is a four-time winner of the Minnesota Newspaper Association's Herman Roe Award, which honors excellence in editorial writing.
