Jeans and Jewels Gala set

The fifth annual Jeans and Jewels Gala will be held on Friday, September 27 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Broadway Ballroom in Alexandria.

The event is hosted by the Alexandria Public Schools Education Foundation to show appreciation for 206 Club Members (individuals or couples that donate $206 annually to the foundation). A flyer will be mailed to 206 Club members in September, along with two member tickets and two guest tickets.

The event is also a fundraiser that is open to the public. It features a silent auction, jewelry drawings, appetizers and more. This year's theme is "Back to School."

A new feature at this year's event is a spelling bee featuring District 206 alumni Sara Carlson, Alexandria mayor and business owner and former teacher; Dennis Stark, Alexandria fire marshal; Greg Toivonen, 3rd grade teacher at Garfield Elementary School; Tony Lussenhop, local physician; Jessica Boyer, director of local United Way.

Attendees pay $10 to pick a winner from these contestants. Whoever is right will share half the pot with the others who also picked that winner and the other half will go to the foundation.

The Alexandria Public Schools Education Foundation welcomes anyone who would like to support the education of area students by donating $206 to join The 206 Club.

The annual tax-free contribution to the endowment fund ensures sufficient financial resources to support innovation in the classroom for projects that go above and beyond regular curriculum.

Last year the foundation awarded more than $20,000 in grants for these projects.

All first time 206 Club members who join before 8:30 p.m. on September 27 will have their names placed in a drawing for an Ipad at the Jeans and Jewels Gala.
