Alex ArtWorks' Third Thursdays Art Show opens for the season on Thursday, June 20. The other two shows will take place on Thursdays, July 18 and August 15. Each show runs from 4 to 7 p.m. at Depot Express Restaurant in Alexandria.

Each month, selected artists will have their art on display until the next month's event. All art exhibited is for sale; a cash bar will be available.

June's opening artists are Tracy Anderson, Rhianna O'Shea, Doreen Strom and Merodie "Mimi" Seykora.

Based in Alexandria, Anderson recently emerged as a professional oil painter and has won many prestigious awards. With a grant from the McKnight Foundation in 2006, she developed her watercolor skills and integrated those skills into oil painting.

Her mission is to use her God-given talents and gifts to serve others in various art forms.

O'Shea graduated from Concordia College with a degree in studio art and English literature. She worked as a graphic artist for three years with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks baseball team, then returned to school at the University of Minnesota, Morris for a teaching degree.

She experiments with mediums such as oil paint, oil pastel, chalk and stain glass. She resides in Garfield and teaches 7th grade language arts in Alexandria.

Strom does acrylic paintings. "Nature and animals inspire me, the drama and emotion invoked by both," she said. "I find beauty in most everything...."

Strom has been artistic her whole life, but 2010 was pivotal year. She is self-taught, with influence from her artist mother.

As a potter, Seykora enjoys making usable items. "The technique of transforming a lump of raw clay into a solid usable piece is alluring," she said.

Working as an art teacher gives her the opportunity to share her love of art. She is president of Alex ArtWorks, on the Arts Advisory Council, is a member of Art of the Lakes, Alexandria Area Arts Association and Evansville Art Coalition and was a chair for Art in the Park.
