Robotics team competes at state

FRC Team 3313 Mechatronics from Jefferson High School (JHS) in Alexandria recently competed at the Minnesota State Championship.

The Minnesota State Robotics Competition is a Minnesota State High School League-sanctioned event. The competition was held at Williams Arena on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.

Out of 180 teams in Minnesota, the top 30 qualified for the event. Teams qualified based on results at previous events. Going into the event, the JHS team was ranked third overall out of the 180 teams.

Robots played the game called Ultimate Ascent, where individual robots shot Frisbees for points and climbed metal pyramids.

Team 3313 arrived at Williams Arena on Friday night and had its robot inspected. A few issues arose, but it was ready to go on Saturday morning.

Sophomore Tyler Floding fixed a wheel issue on the robot. Senior Brandon Thoennes also had some innovative ideas for fixing inspection problems.

There were no practice matches, so Mechatronics warmed up during the first few matches in the morning.

The drive team of Brandon Thoennes, Dalton Myhr and Bryce Klang had not competed since March but was able to work hard and succeed throughout the tournament.

Zack Gilbertson, Carson Stowe and many other team members scouted other teams and got the drivers prepared for future matches.

Mechatronics finished 3-5 and placed 19th out of 30. It did not make it into the playoffs of the competition. This was the last competition of the year for the team.
