The Central Lakes Concert Association (CLCA), in its 29th season, presents the Classic Big Band and the Nostalgics in concert on Sunday, October 14 at 3 p.m. at the Jefferson High School in Alexandria. The doors open 45 minutes before concerts.

The Classic Big Band was formed in 2002 in Minneapolis and released their first CD the same year. The band, under the direction of Dan Odegaard, is one of the best bands at recreating Glenn Miller arrangements.

Odegaard, who is a dentist by day, has spent countless hours transcribing charts from the original recordings for the 17-piece band. Members of the band range in age from 30s to 80s. Many have lived through the swing era and heard Glenn Miller's Band in person when it played at the Prom Ballroom in St. Paul in 1941.

Trumpeter Danny Tetzlaff played in a band that bought an original arrangement from Glenn Miller when he played at the Nicollet Hotel in Minneapolis in 1937.

Band members had to hand copy their own parts from the original score. Each member of the saxophone section is also an accomplished clarinetist, allowing the band to recreate many of the varied Miller reed sounds. Brass players have obtained some of the special mutes used by the Miller band to make their distinct sound. Sample their sound at

The members of the Classic Big Band are all seasoned, professional musicians. They are dedicated to preserving the original sounds of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Harry James and other big bands from the swing era, as well as the sounds and music of today. They perform a variety of big band dance music, concentrating on original arrangements of name bands from the swing era. The group plays a variety of dance styles besides swing, including the samba, cha-cha, rhumba, waltz and tango.

The Nostalgics Vocal Quartet recreates the close harmony of 1940s vocal groups like The Modernaires, the Pied Pipers and The Sentimentalists.
