Osakis hosts 8th annual Quilts Along the Trail

The Quilts Along the Trail show in Osakis has become a popular annual event. This year's show will be held Saturday, September 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The talents and skills of central Minnesota quilters will be on display during the 8th annual Quilts Along the Trail show in Osakis, Saturday, September 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

Displays include many varieties and time periods from antique and vintage to traditional and contemporary.

A special showcase will focus on star quilts and exhibitors are welcome to exhibit new work or existing and vintage pieces.

The exhibits and activities line two blocks of the Central Lakes Trail right next to downtown Osakis. Several vendor booths, a quilters' flea market, a consignment sale, food booths and live entertainment will be part of the quilt show.

An ongoing "Make and Take" workshop takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A handmade quilt is given away in a door prize drawing just for registering. You need not be present to win the quilt.

Entries for exhibits can register now and up until two days before the opening of the show. There is no entry fee and no judging, just the enjoyment of sharing the art and beauty of quilts. Items shown do not have to be made by the exhibitor to be eligible for display.

In case of rain, visitors are invited to see the displays and challenge quilts at the Quilts Along the Trail Museum at 2nd and Main Streets in Osakis. Hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday through October 16.

Events on the trail on Saturday, September 10 include:

• The "Bed Turning" features a presentation with quilts displayed on a bed. As each quilt is turned, its history and other information about style are given by a qualified speaker -- usually the owner or curator of the quilt.

• The "Challenge Quilt Show" features items done by local and regional quilters who have used the same pattern of fabric in a package of fat quarters. Of the 90-plus displays in three categories, no two quilts are alike even though the same patterns of fat quarters are used. Some of these challenge quilt items will be for sale by the challenge quilters.

• Back again this year will be a "Quilters Flea Market," which includes pre-cut fat quarters, other packaged quilts blocks, bags of usable scrap material and remnants, finished quilts and other quilted pieces, all at bargain prices.

Registration forms for quilt exhibits are now available at the Osakis Information Center or at the Quilt Museum. Registration will take place the day before the show, September 9, at the Information Center.
