JHS math team earns third place at third meet

The Jefferson High School (JHS) math team had its third of five meets on Monday, December 13 in Fergus Falls. JHS came in third with 20 points.

The top individual scorer was Jen DeCock, who earned six points. She was followed by Peter Brackin, Claire Donovan, Ben LeVahn, Kelli Montbriand, Nicholas Schlapkohl and Carson Stowe, who earned four points each.

On the season, Kelli Montbriand leads the team with 20 total individual points. She is followed by Taylor Score with 17 individual points.

Team scores are calculated by combining the scores of eight pre-selected individuals on individual exams and points earned during a team exam.

During the individual rounds, students have 12 minutes to complete four rigorous math problems. Individuals earn points as follows - the first problem is worth one point and the other three are worth two points. Each student takes two exams. The maximum an individual can earn at one meet is 14 points.

The problems cover different topics in algebra, geometry, advanced algebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus and calculus.
