Letter - It was an inspiring sight

To the editor:

It was inspiring to see the long line of helmets stretched out ahead of us on the trail.

Almost 100 people shared in Alexandria's first Ride of Silence. From the day we first approached Jake Capistrant with the idea of an area ride, we have received nothing but encouragement. Jake, his family and friends organized a meaningful ride on what turned out to be a beautiful evening.

The U.S. Bank lot provided a perfect staging spot. We want to thank the city council for their support, the media for getting the word out there, and the police department for managing traffic to make the ride safer.

Friends, who hadn't ridden for years, dusted off bikes and pumped up their tires, and joined other community members and bicycle enthusiasts to honor fallen cyclists and promote safe biking. The success of the ride is only a small indication of the support we have felt in the year since Dennis' accident. It has been a difficult year. We managed only with the help of our family, friends, faith and this great community.

The Ride of Silence is a worldwide event always held on the third Wednesday in May. Mark your calendar, and we hope to see you next year.
