Letter - Cost to operate house too much

To the editor:

There have been some questions about the house that George and Ellen Palmer donated to Someplace Safe. We hope this letter will help your readers better understand our services.

Since 1979, Someplace Safe, formerly known as Region IV Council on Domestic Violence, has served thousands of women and children and saved countless lives in West Central Minnesota. In addition to providing advocacy, education and outreach services, Someplace Safe also operates a domestic violence shelter located in Fergus Falls.

We provide services to victims of violence and staff outreach offices in Otter Tail, Douglas, Grant, Pope, Stevens, Traverse, Big Stone and Wilkin counties. The services we provide are funded by grant dollars from governmental and philanthropic entities as well as the generosity of individuals across the region such as Mr. and Mrs. Palmer. Without the contributions and support from area residents, our services would be greatly reduced.

Several years ago the Palmers graciously donated the Parkers Prairie house to support Someplace Safe in its mission. The house has been used to help two families since it was donated by the Palmers. Due to the operating costs and the limited number of people that can be served by this facility, the board has chosen to sell the house and use the proceeds to fund services to hundreds of families in need of help.

We are most grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Palmer for their gift, which will allow Someplace Safe to continue to provide outreach, education and advocacy to the residents of Parkers Prairie and the surrounding area.

Board of directors and

Jeanne Jacobs, director,

Someplace Safe,

Fergus Falls, MN
