A Minnesota State Council on Disability (MSCOD) Town Hall on Voting Rights meeting will take place on Monday, March 18 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at Douglas County Human Services, 809 Elm Street, Suite 1186, Alexandria.
Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie announced this week that Minnesota’s election system performs among the top states according the Elections Performance Index report released by the Pew Charitable Trusts.
“This report shows a dramatic increase to the success rate for absentee ballot acceptance,” said Secretary of State Mark Ritchie. “The changes made by the legislature and our office have simplified the absentee voting process while protecting its integrity.”
They’re called “under votes” – ballots that for some reason or another, voters choose to leave blank for some races.
There were a lot of under votes in Tuesday’s election in Douglas County. Local election officials could only speculate why.
Two challengers defeated incumbents in Douglas County commissioner races Tuesday.
In District 2, Jim Stratton edged Norm Salto by a margin of 2,109 to 1,867, and in District 4, Charlie Meyer prevailed over Paul C. Anderson, 2,157 to 1,697.
The incumbents in the three other commissioner districts were re-elected.
Here are some issues related to a proposed constitutional amendment that would require Minnesota voters to produce photographic identification before casting ballots:
Process: The Minnesota Constitution is amended when the Legislature passes a proposed amendment and a majority of voters in a general election approve it. The governor has no official role. The proposed amendment will be on the November 6 ballot.
State Sens. David Tomassoni and Keith Langseth worry that elderly Minnesotans like their mothers may not be allowed to vote if the state requires photo identification before casting ballots. But photo ID sponsor Sen. Warren Limmer, R-Maple Grove, said that it only makes sense to make sure a voter is who he says he is.
