Heather Falk fanned herself Saturday in the hot, muggy Minnesota Capitol building as legislators gradually worked toward finishing the state budget and adjourning for the year.

The results of the legislative survey we distributed in District 11A have been compiled and the percentages indicate local citizens want state government to get its own spending habits in line instead of raising taxes.
There is an alarming trend at the Capitol toward converting elected positions into appointed occupations. What bothers me about this is it goes against our system of government: of the people, by the people and for the people.
The 776 medium security prisoners at the Moose Lake prison would be transferred to the Appleton facility under a bill promoted by Rep. Torrey Westrom, R-Elbow Lake, and Sen. Bill Ingebrigtsen, R-Alexandria.
Minnesota’s latest budget forecast is not good news: $5.2 billion in the red. We’re faced with a $426 million deficit for the current biennium (ending June 30) and a $4.8 billion deficit for the coming 2009-2010 biennium.
