Nearly 12 million adults were victims of identity fraud last year, up 13 percent from the previous year, according to Javelin Strategy and Research. Identity fraud or theft occur when thieves use your personal information to commit a crime, whether that means stealing your credit card details or using your Social Security number to set up a fraudulent bank account.
Online scammers are finding inactive Social Security numbers online – most of which are assigned to children under the age of 18 who have not started using them yet – and selling them under different names to help people establish fake credit. The scheme may lead to significant debts for children that might be almost impossible to pay off.
