Ice swimming. Norwegians, Swedes and Fins do it all the time for no apparent reason. Folks of all ilks banded together on Sunday at Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center in Alexandria to be freezin’ for a reason – to support Special Olympics by jumping into the icy-cold waters of Lake Darling.

The Polar Bear Plunge is presented by Minnesota law enforcement as part of the year-round Law Enforcement Torch Run events to benefit Special Olympics.
Registration is now open for the 2013 Alexandria Polar Bear Plunge, presented by Minnesota law enforcement to benefit Special Olympics Minnesota. Plungers define what it means to be “freezin’ for a reason” by raising funds to jump into Minnesota’s frigid waters.
More than 14,000 brave plungers raised a record $2.85 million this winter for Special Olympics Minnesota by jumping into freezing-cold water in one of 16 Polar Bear Plunge events around the state.
Coordinated by law enforcement, the events offered fun-loving adrenaline junkies an opportunity to be “freezin’ for a reason” and to have a blast in the process.
A bundled-up crowd cheered, cringed and laughed Sunday as hundreds of people plunged into the dang-cold water of Lake Darling during the 2012 Alexandria Polar Plunge.
This year’s Polar Plunge registered 340 people who willingly jumped into the icy water, raising more than $60,000 for Special Olympics Minnesota.
Brave souls are gearing up for the coldest moment in their lives as they register for the 2011 Alexandria Polar Bear Plunge event, coordinated by local law enforcement in support of Special Olympics Minnesota.
