The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is looking for organizations to sponsor the 2013 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and provide free meals to Minnesota children 18 or younger during the summer when school is out.
Right now, 8.3 million seniors experience food insecurity in the U.S., and by 2025, it is estimated that this number will grow to 9.5 million.
Enter Meals on Wheels, a nationwide program that delivers meals to the elderly, homebound and disabled.
In Douglas County, more than 140 people receive meals from this program and similar programs take place in Osakis, Glenwood, Hoffman and Parkers Prairie.
Alexandria Public Schools and Zion Lutheran School in Alexandria are participating in the federal Summer Food Service Program, which provides free breakfast and lunch to all children 18 and younger.
The Summer Free Meals Program is designed to fill the gap in nutrition that may occur during the summer months.
