Newly elected members of the Alexandria City Council took their oath of office Wednesday at City Hall.
Mayor Sara Carlson is Alexandria’s second female mayor. Dorothy Kobs was the first, winning the position in 1987.
The Alexandria City Council will have a new look when it convenes in 2013.
Sara Carlson, who has been serving as Ward 2’s council member, will be the new mayor. She defeated Mark Pederson in Tuesday’s election by a margin of 3,771 votes to 2,216. Incumbent Mayor Dan Ness is stepping down from the council.
Mark R. Pederson has formally announced his candidacy for mayor of Alexandria.
He is running against Sara Carlson, Ward 2 council member and the only other mayoral candidate to file for the November 6 election.
Saying that the next governor will determine the fate of cities across the state, mayors announced at a State Capitol press conference that they are turning their attention to the 2010 governor’s race and will be traveling the state to call on candidates to address local government aid (LGA).
