A man charged in the deaths of two people just over a week ago surprised a Mahnomen County courtroom today when he pleaded guilty to murder and other charges during what was expected to be a routine pre-trial hearing.
A man held on suspicion of murdering two elderly rural Mahnomen County, Minn., residents is being described as generous and trusted by others at a center for chemically dependent people where he lived.

Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher Dewey suffered two bullet wounds Wednesday morning while investigating a report of gunshots in the town of Mahnomen. Dewey remains under sedation much of the time at Fargo’s MeritCare Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition, to help reduce swelling of his brain.
