Wet conditions have lowered the fire danger and prompted the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to lift burning restrictions in all or parts of 32 Minnesota counties. Restrictions were lifted at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 21.
Over the past 23 years arson fires have caused 56 deaths and more than $333.7 million in property damage in Minnesota. During National Arson Awareness Week – May 5-11 – State Fire Marshal Jerry Rosendahl wants to focus public attention on a crime that affects every Minnesotan.
In the space of a month, Jack Baumann of Alexandria lost his wife, Arlene, to heart problems and then his three dogs and home to a house fire.
The house, a Civil War-era log home that had been extensively remodeled, went up in flames last Wednesday.
Fires caused more than $750,000 worth of damage in the Alexandria area last year. Local firefighters prevented nearly $1 million more from going up in smoke. The numbers were presented at Monday’s Alexandria City Council meeting by Fire Chief Jeff Karrow.
