Forty-five 7th-12th grade students from Discovery Middle School (DMS) and Jefferson High School (JHS) in Alexandria participated in the Tri-College Mathematics Contest on March 13 at Minnesota State University Moorhead.
At this time last year, the newspaper ran a story about the return of spring: brown lawns, bluebirds and 60-degree temperatures.
Although there’s not a hint of spring right now, here’s one sure sign of it: the return of the Echo Press Ice Out Contest.
It asks the perennial question: When will the ice melt off Lake L’Homme Dieu?
Chad Malvin of Carlos doesn’t usually fish for northerns through the ice, but on Saturday, he was willing to make an exception.
“On a day like today, I put down a big jig with a big [shiner] minnow, hoping,” he said. “Because I knew a smaller northern is a bigger fish in this tournament.”
