Stadium backers don't believe everything they read
Dont believe everything you read, especially in sports blogs and columns about government issues. That is what some Minnesota politicians say after dealing with Vikings stadium issues for months, or ...

Column - I like Facebook; I dislike Facebook
People often ask me what I think of Facebook. “Not much,” is my answer. Well, actually, I should say, “I like it and I dislike it.”By Dennis Dalman , May 25, 2012
It's Our Turn: Parent-coach clashes affect the athletes, too
The parent-coach relationship in high school sports has long been a contentious one across the country. Every coach in every sport has to deal with parents upset with one thing or another. Whether it’s playing time for their kid or the way a coach handles his players or instills a game plan, there is always someone who thinks they have the answer.By Eric Morken , May 25, 2012
Column - 1987: Baby born in Chevy Caprice in Brandon
MAY 2002 In a “World Competitor Day” speech in Alexandria, Governor Jesse Ventura said it was time to take a cue from the Big Ole statue: “Strap on your helmet. Pick up your spear and your shield. Get ready to do battle in the international arena.”By Marge VanGorp , May 23, 2012
I'm just sayin' - Beam me up, Scottie
“Beam me up Scottie, there’s no intelligent life down here.” This was the famous line uttered by Captain Kirk from the TV series Star Trek in the 1960s. Captain Kirk and a team of explorers had been “beamed” down to an unknown planet to search for life. Folks my age remember it.By DuWayne Paul, Columnist , May 23, 2012
It's Our Turn: The blissful sound of silence in a noisy world
What’s your favorite sound? I have a lot of them. The one I hear right now as I write this is the quiet, gentle song of the wind chimes on my front porch. But to be honest, quite often my favorite sound is silence.By Tara Bitzan , May 18, 2012
Column - College students eat lots of Ramen noodles
I call them the "Ramen Shoppers." They never fail to fill me with sympathy and sadness. You can see them in the grocery stores of all college towns. They are typically between the ages of 19 and 24. Pushing their grocery carts down the aisles, they take time intently pondering the price of this or that item. Sometimes they linger in front of some shelf items with dreamy, hungry looks on their faces.By Dennis Dalman , May 18, 2012
Column - 1912: New schoolhouse built in Belle River district
MAY 2002 Lance Corporal Jim Cox, 1998 graduate of Jefferson High School, shared his experiences aboard the USS Bataan in the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan following 9/11.By Marge VanGorp , May 16, 2012
It's Our Turn: Great moments happen every day
Every choice you make today has an impact on the life you wake up to tomorrow. This sounds like common sense, but how often do you think about the choices you don’t make? Indifference. Walking past the woman who drops her groceries, because you just don’t have time. Pocketing the $10 bill you see fall from an old man’s wallet, because he should have been more watchful. We’ve all been in scenarios like this at some point in time. A missed opportunity for something great.

I'm just sayin' - What will we become? (Eighth and final in a series)
Over the last four months, I have written about how we came to be a country and what we are like today. In many ways America has evolved into something beautiful and admirable and in other ways something the Founding Fathers never imagined.

Column - Shirla deserves endless rose bouquets
Life is no bed of roses, that’s for sure, but I think Shirla Hanson might disagree.
Shirla just retired after working for 37 years at the Douglas County Library.

It's Our Turn: Why do runners run?
I have a hobby that’s hard for some people to understand: running.
I know why it’s hard to grasp. We can look downright miserable out there, slogging alongside the road or on the trail – huffing away, sweating from every pore, eyes grimaced in pain and concentration. Why on earth would someone submit themselves to that kind of torture?

Column - 1912: Douglas County has 150 car owners, 50 in clud
MAY 2002

Column - Dick Clark had no right to die
How dare Dick Clark die? He wasn’t supposed to die. He had no right to die.
When we baby boomers were young, that’s what we’d say, “Dick Clark will never die. He never ages. He’ll stay young forever.”

It's Our Turn: It's time to pull the ripcord
Things sure aren’t the way they used to be.
While watching a couple of Western movies over the weekend, I was reminded of how far we’ve come from the values and traditions that created this country.
