The Alexandria Technical and Community College Foundation opted for a change in scenery this year for its annual luncheon held in Alexandria last Friday afternoon.

The 9th Annual Advanced Placement (AP) Report to the Nation was released by the College Board this week, showing that more Minnesota public high school graduates are enrolling in and passing college-level AP courses and exams.
To acknowledge and highlight the importance of high school students being prepared to apply to colleges, Governor Mark Dayton has proclaimed the week of November 12 -16, 2012, as the second annual College Application Week.
For many students, the process of preparing for and applying to college can be a daunting task. In an effort to ease the process and ensure students and families have all the resources necessary to ease the transition from high school to higher education, the Minnesota Department of Education has launched a brand new website, “Ready, Set, Go.”

Douglas County has experienced a brain gain in the last 40 years, joining the rest of the country in what has been a massive increase in the number of adults who have earned college degrees.
In 1970, 6.3 percent of those older than 25 years of age had college degrees in Douglas County. By 2010, 21.4 percent of adults here had completed college.
Between packing for college, buying school supplies and recovering from sticker shock, parents may be too bogged down to remember to pass on some pointers regarding finances as their child leaves the nest.
Buying college textbooks used to be simple: Professors told you what books to buy. You went to the college bookstore and bought them. At the end of the course, you had the option to sell them back. These days, it’s a little different and a lot more expensive.
Through District 206 Community Education, the Alexandria Area Adult Basic Education (ABE) Consortium is partnering with Alexandria Technical and Community College (ATCC) to offer a free healthcare prep course at ATCC this summer. Since this course is being offered at no cost to the first 20 qualified applicants, early registration is recommended. The registration deadline is May 23.
Higher education has long been the way that many Americans have pursued greater economic opportunity and increased earning potential. In recent years, more students have turned to for-profit colleges--whose investors make money when students enroll in the schools--for certificates and degrees, some involving online coursework. Enrollment at for-profit colleges has increased more than 225 percent since 1998.
