Local DFLers reorganize; plan 'birthday party' 
The Douglas County DFL general membership held its county convention at the Alexandria Technical and Community College on March 12.
New officers were elected to the Douglas County DFL Board – Charles Nettestad, chair; Bonnie Schnell, vice chair; and John Heydt as outreach officer. Ruth Obert, secretary, and Cal Anderson, treasurer, were re-elected to their respective positions.

Happy birthday, DFL – you’re 68 years young!
Some people ask, what the heck is the DFL? Unlike most other states in the union, Minnesota has a long tradition of third parties. In 1915 the Non-Partisan League and the Duluth Union Labor Party merged to form the Farmer-Labor Party to reduce the power of corporate political interests that were openly exploiting farmers and laborers in rural and urban settings across the state.

Polar Bear Plunges raise $2.85 million for Special Olympics Minnesota 
More than 14,000 brave plungers raised a record $2.85 million this winter for Special Olympics Minnesota by jumping into freezing-cold water in one of 16 Polar Bear Plunge events around the state.
Coordinated by law enforcement, the events offered fun-loving adrenaline junkies an opportunity to be “freezin’ for a reason” and to have a blast in the process.

Senate approves voter photo ID 
Showing photo identification before voting may be inconvenient, but the senator sponsoring a proposal to require voter photo ID says it is worth it.
“I will willingly admit that there is some burden placed on some of our citizens in exercising their right to vote,” Senator Scott Newman said Friday before Minnesota senators voted 36-30 mostly along party lines to require photo IDs. “On balance, I believe this [constitutional] amendment is the right thing to do.”

Anderson endorsed by GOP in District 12B 
State Representative Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck, was endorsed March 17 as the Republican candidate for Minnesota House of Representatives in the new District 12B.
This endorsing convention took place in Starbuck along with the conventions for House District 12A and Senate District 12.
