COMMENTARY
Commentary - Earth in the balance: What will you do?
You’ve heard it all before. The last 10 years the hottest since mankind started keeping records – about the time the Industrial Revolution gathered speed. Record floods displacing millions, droughts with thousands of cattle dead, fires destroying millions of acres of valuable forest and farmlands. The Amazon rainforest burned off by cattle ranchers responding to record beef prices.April 25, 2012
Commentary - Commissioners provide 2011 summary
The county board accepted the Transportation Plan for the county. Acknowledged appointment of Karen Simmons, Douglas County library director. Accepted the Highway Study done in cooperation with the city of Alexandria. Approved three grant applications for improving Brophy, Curt Felt and Runestone parks. Were informed that 30,000 home-delivered meals had to be cut from our region. Accepted the report of County Health Rankings – excellent.April 06, 2012
Commentary - Job creation answers can be found in our own back yard
We’ve been hearing a lot about “job creation” lately. Legislators, the governor, businesses and local citizens across the state are looking for new ways to grow jobs and get Minnesota working again. But what works in the metropolitan areas of the state does not always work in Greater Minnesota. So instead of sending away for advice, the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities (CGMC) decided to look in its own back yard.April 04, 2012
Commentary - Remembrance of country school
We were born during the Depression and became country school children during WWII while attending Riverview School, two miles west of Marshfield, Wisconsin. About the age of 80 years now, we have many memories of those days just the same.February 01, 2012
Commentary - Supermajority amendment is short-sighted
Brace yourself. If you like the gridlock in Washington, you will love one of the bills now being heard at the Legislature. It proposes to amend the constitution by requiring a supermajority of the Legislature to approve any increases in taxes or expenditures.February 01, 2012
Commentary - Thoughts on religion and the First Amendment
In Wallace v. Jaffree (1985), U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist observed, “It seems highly unlikely that the House of Representatives would simultaneously consider proposed amendments to the Constitution and enact an important piece of territorial legislation which conflicted with the intent of those proposals…”January 25, 2012
Ag commissioner commentary: New effort with farmers will improve water quality
Minnesota is a headwaters state for three major watersheds – the Mississippi River, the Red River and Great Lakes. That means a rain drop that falls on a Minnesota farm field can end up in the Gulf of Mexico, Hudson Bay or the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It also means that decisions made in management of Minnesota land – whether urban, suburban or rural – can make a difference thousands of miles away.By Dave Frederickson, commissioner of Minnesota Dept. of Agriculture , January 22, 2012
Commentary - Two-year degree can fuel economy
This year I invited Kevin Kopischke, president of Alexandria Technical and Community College, to join me at the State of the Union speech on Tuesday evening. I believe his presence helps me highlight the importance of technical education for the future of America’s economy. And, have no doubt, revitalizing the economy continues to be the central challenge facing our nation.January 20, 2012
Commentary: Proven program helps create rural jobs
In two short years the Rural Microentrepreneur Assistance Program (RMAP), administered through USDA, has proven to be a solid job creator in rural America. The program provides loan capital and technical assistance grants to small business development organizations to make loans and provide support to startup and existing rural businesses.By Step Larsen, Center for Rural Affairs , January 14, 2012
Commentary - Iraq, an unwise war, sequel
Seven years ago in this space I listed the following three reasons why our invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq was unwise (having been opposed to our attack before it was launched).January 13, 2012
Commentary - Pipeline pushers strain to justify job creation
Senator Bill Ingebrigtsen (December 23 Echo Press) used up an enormous number of words and space trying to convince us that the Keystone XL Pipeline would create lots of jobs. Aside from the morally murky notion that one created job offsets the asthma and heart disease caused by air pollution, the billions lost in the floods, droughts and wind storms seen this past decade ($52 billion in the U.S. in 2011), and the environmental degradation caused by tar sands oil, he's just plain wrong about how pipelines create jobs.January 13, 2012
Commentary - A response to jail contract story
Regarding the article, “Local doctor vies for county jail contract,” MEnD Correctional Care would like the community of Alexandria to know that we make every effort to invest fully in the communities we serve. Many of our company practices are generated with the county taxpayer in mind.January 11, 2012
Commentary - A response to anti-Tea Party column
The anti-Tea Party article by Dennis Dalman of December 30, 2011 compelled me to respond to an abbreviated list of his quotes. “The Tea Party finally overplayed its hand.” No, with the country in such an economic mess, caused by both Democrats and Republicans, we need our leaders to have a spine.January 11, 2012
Commentary: Moving Minnesota forward
As we turn the calendar from the holiday season, we can see that the 2012 legislative session is right around the corner. This year’s activity at the Capitol is scheduled to be shorter; we are set to convene on January 24 and wrap up near the end of April.By Senator Bill Ingebrigtsen, R-Alexandria , January 03, 2012
Commentary - Oh, what a year at Evansville nursing home
Soon the inside became so pretty to the eyes with floors that sparkle so shiny you can see your own reflection in them, and everything is so clean and sanitary. The decorations are beautiful. The dining rooms are warm and glowing and residents’ rooms are gorgeous. The Evansville Care Center is beautiful and well maintained.December 30, 2011
