It's Our Turn: A tough bite to chew
Due to an over population of roosters, we have been forced to, must I say it…butcher them. Frito the rooster became the main ingredient of a lovely chicken soup my husband prepared.

Column - Cain could cause Obama sleepless nights
Herman Cain said that if he becomes president, he will bring "humor" to the White House.
Yes, I believe he would.
Every time I hear Cain's voice coming from the living-room TV, I drop what I'm doing and rush into the room to watch him and listen to him.

Column - 1911: Fire sweeps through Lowry, burning businesses
A fire swept through Lowry, destroying or damaging the Hagstrom Machine Ship, Middent Drug Store, Smith Velander Harness Shop, and the Russell Benson residence.

Column - It wasn't Kansas anymore; it was a blast
People never believe me when I tell them I attended a "midget convention" once upon a time.
If only I'd clipped and saved the news story to prove it.
One day in the early 1990s, someone at the Alexandria Echo Press told me he'd just heard there was a midget convention going on at the Holiday Inn.
I didn't believe it, but I grabbed my reporter's bag and headed out.

Echo Press - A look back at 120 years
Throughout the year, in celebration of our 120th anniversary, we have been running ads featuring long-time Echo Press readers.
It’s been fun to hear what parts of the paper people like best, what keeps them subscribing year after year, how long they’ve been subscribers, and so on

Column - Higher education: Time wasted or well spent?
For decades now, we have urged our children to go to college, to get a good education, and that would lead to a good job and a successful life. Today’s education systems and the state of our economy make it painfully obvious that this is not a tried and true formula any longer.

Column - Democracy is rising from the streets
These "Occupy Wall Street" demonstrations happening nationwide are proof that this country's democracy is terribly crippled, to the point of dysfunction and even maybe - in the not too distant future - cataclysmic breakdown.

Column - Boo-hoo! I miss Halloween
Have you ever been scared of a cow? Or heard a princess say, “I vant to suck your blood?” Today’s Halloween costumes and celebrations have no origin in the roots of All Hallows Eve.

It's Our Turn: Am I from 'around here' yet?
At what point can I officially say, “I’m from Alexandria”?
I feel “official” after living here for 11 years now.
I’ve done my time being labeled, “not from around here,” but, will I ever be eligible to say, “I’m from Alexandria”?

Column - Godard's brilliance in films lost its dazzle
If there's anything worse than a French intellectual wannabe, it's a French intellectual wannabe with a movie camera.
Case in point: movie director Jean-Luc Godard.
He is hailed as one of the top 10 directors of all time. In my opinion, Godard can be fascinating, but mostly he's over-rated. At one time, his films were fresh and exciting. Now, sad to say, most of them are staler than day-old bread.
