COLUMNS
When one door closes, another one opens
I am going to share with you, my dear readers, my last column for the newspaper, which is in today's issue, February 11. Enjoy. Here it is: As I sat down to my computer, fingers poised upon my keybo...

Column - 1911: Council votes to close saloons on Christmas Day
December 1911
The City Council voted unanimously and the mayor proclaimed that all saloons be closed on Christmas day.

Column - The bottom line on stress
With the holiday season upon us, it is always a good time to stop and take stock of our lives, what we are blessed with, and what we should be thankful for. During that process, I also came upon some thoughts regarding the things that make us a bit crazy and negative – things like politics, relationships, money, school, job, health issues, etc. I could go on and on, but I will stop there.

Column - 'Will you still need me when I'm 64?'
At one point, a couple people verging on mummyhood inched past me. I felt young again, sort of, for a couple seconds. Then a depressing thought struck me: The only thing older than us concert-goers here tonight is this Elks building – erected in 1913.

It's Our Turn: A picture is worth 1,000 words
Nature always seems to give me a helping hand by doling out beautiful sunrises and storm clouds crackling with lightning, birch trees loaded with colorful leaves and pines filled with snow – almost impossible to pass up.

Column - 1911: 700-pound moose shot
November 2001
Construction of a 35,000 square-foot themed water park is scheduled for next spring at Arrowwood Resort.

Column - Mute button best invention since the wheel
The mute button on my TV remote is, I swear, the best invention since the wheel. It allows me to squelch to silence what is my all-time-worst pet peeve: TV commercials. Actually, ongoing "torture" is more accurate than mere "peeve."

I'm just sayin' - The strange case of Roscoe Filburn
Have you ever heard of Roscoe Filburn? Neither had I until doing some recent research. With all the talk and political debate over the last few years about government and courts overstepping their bounds, I decided to do some research and see if I could find some instances that made the case one way or the other.

It's Our Turn: Remember to be thankful
Several months ago, a special Echo Press reader told me she had clipped out the Thanksgiving column I had written several years ago and rereads it every once in awhile because it makes her feel good.
To a writer, that’s the ultimate compliment!

Column - Lambs sacrificed to football god
At Penn State, eight lambs – eight that we know of – were sacrificed to the Almighty Football God.
That's really not much of an exaggeration. It's obvious, from recent news reports, that Penn State's football program was to be protected at all costs from any whiff of scandal that might tarnish its sanctity.

The following is a collection of stories and other items that were included in Alexandria newspapers over the years.

Are radar detectors legal in MN?
If you choose to use a radar detector, where you place it could be an issue. State law prohibits any objects suspended between the driver and windshield, other than sun visors, rearview mirrors, global positioning systems or navigation systems when mounted or located near the bottom-most portion of the windshield; and electronic toll collection devices. So mounting it to the windshield would be illegal.

Column - Hooray for long-overdue consumer victory
I have complained about all of those petty problems, in some cases many times. All to no avail. I am seriously hoping this consumer victory over Bank of America is just the start of more to come. Dare I hope a critical mass is forming that will force arrogant companies to serve their customers instead of gouging or spiting them?

It's Our Turn: A tough bite to chew
Due to an over population of roosters, we have been forced to, must I say it…butcher them. Frito the rooster became the main ingredient of a lovely chicken soup my husband prepared.

Column - 1911: Kensington schoolhouse, uninsured, is destroyed by fire
